Here’s a fun holiday project my teenage cousin is working on with his classmates to present to residents at area nursing homes. These evergreen and cranberry wreaths are easy, affordable and add a festive touch to any room.
The kids are working assembly line style as it does take a while to pin individual cranberries on the Styrofoam ball that decorates the wreath. However, once the cranberry application is complete you should have no problem completing the project (alone) in less than 20 minutes.
EVERGREEN AND CRANBERRY CHRISTMAS WREATH
Materials:
For Wreath:
1 12-inch pre-made evergreen wreath form
1 thin needle
5 yards of waxed dental floss, cut into five 36-inch lengths
1 12-oz. bag fresh cranberries
Spray Acrylic
For Cranberry Ball:
1 5-inch Styrofoam ball (you can get a bigger or smaller ball according to your preference)
Dark red craft paint
1 12-oz. bag fresh cranberries
1 300 count box metal pins with small flat heads, about 1-inch long
1 12-18-inch length of 3/4-inch wide red ribbon
1 48-inch length of 3/4-inch wide red ribbon
Directions:
For the Wreath: Start with one 36-inch length of thread and a thin needle. Knot one end of the thread and add cranberries one at a time by piercing through the center with the needle. Continue to end of the thread; secure end with a large knot. Repeat with the four remaining lengths of thread. Wrap each strand around the wreath 3-4 times.
For Ball: Paint Styrofoam ball with red paint. Set aside to dry.
Insert pins through each cranberry and press into foam, placing berries as closely together as possible. Continue until all areas of the foam are covered with cranberries.
(Tip: Placing the berries close together in sections is easier than continuing a single row all the way around the ball.)
To Assemble: Place the 12 to18-inch ribbon length over the top of the wreath with the ends hanging down into the middle. Pin each end of the ribbon to the ball so it hangs in the middle of the wreath. Then, attach the 48-inch ribbon at the top of the ball and tie a bow.
Once the wreath is assembled, spray it liberally with acrylic. If you miss this step your wreath will only last about a week.
