I frequently mention in my blog post how most of use waste about 25 percent of the food that we buy. This is a high number of course, but you know what, if you consider all of the additional things that we throw away as not worth anything of value, this number would be much higher.
I’m not even talking about leftovers here, although saving those and making them into meals is important. No, today I want to talk about the many meals that we can make out of the “nothing” food that normally gets tossed.
Bitten apple
Your child takes a bit or two from an apple and then abandons it. You throw it away, right? Instead, cut off the bitten part, chop the apple, mix it with some cinnamon, sugar and a little butter (optional). Then microwave it for a few minutes to make a yummy homemade snack.
Chicken bones
Pluck those bones bare and then simmer them in a stock pot of water to make chicken stock. This stock can be used for all sorts of cooking. You can also just turn the stock into soup and get a few more meals out of it.
Cereal crumbs
Don’t you hate it when you get to the bottom of the cereal and all that you have left is a box full of crumbs? Instead of tossing them, put those crumbs to good use. You can use the cereal crumbs in place of bread crumbs as a topping for casseroles or as a filler for meat loaf or meatballs.
Canned liquid
Before you drain that can of vegetables or fruit, consider using the liquid. The liquid from a vegetable can be used in soups, stews and sauces. The liquid from fruit can be used to sweeten baked goods and beverages, or it could be used to make popsicles.
Would you like to see more of these type of ideas? Just let me know.
