How to Make Household Chores More Pleasant

Have you ever met anyone who really lived for cleaning? The kind of person that would give up, let’s say, going to the movies, in favor of cleaning the kitchen? Can you believe that these people actually exist? While I like a clean and organized home, I have to confess that there are many other things I would rather do than to do the household chores. But, they have to be done lest we live in dirty, messy houses. So, the trick here is to find ways to make the chores more pleasant, so they will seem to go by quickly.

Here are some tips on how to make household chores more pleasant.

First of all, try not to let things build up. When things build up, they are not only harder to do but can be so overwhelming that the tasks become really stressful. Just think of the kitchen grime that hasn’t been cleaned in a while, or a mountain of laundry on the laundry room floor. Chores will automatically be more pleasant when they take just a few minutes here and there on a daily basis instead of marathon sessions every few weeks.

Next, find ways to reward yourself either after or during the chores. This way, you’ll actually look forward to completing the chores. For example, why not do the ironing while watching your favorite television show or a new movie. You’ll look forward to getting out that iron. Or anticipate enjoying a good book, curled up in the now clean living room or bedroom. Light a candle once the dusting and vacuuming is done and sit back to admire how nice your room looks. Anticipation and reward can work wonders for your enjoyment.

Share the workload. Enlist a best friend who always makes you laugh and vow to help each other clean or do other household tasks. Get your spouse or kids to help and challenge them with some games. You may find that just having someone to help not only makes the work go faster because of the extra hands, but turns it into a fun experience, being with the ones you care about.
