I don’t know that I exactly have attention deficit disorder but I am definitely one of those types of people that likes to multi-task. Doing just one thing is usually not enough for me. I have to be doing two things at once. So when it comes to walking, I can find it to be a very boring activity.
Overall I enjoy walking but if I am just walking and doing nothing else, I get quickly bored. Music on my iPod is a nice distraction but even that can become tedious.
One of the ways to make walking a more enjoyable activity is to invite someone else along. Keeping company can make your walk go even faster, especially if you are engaged in deep conversation.
This can be the perfect time to discuss important issues, not necessarily difficult ones but other things that you just haven’t found the time to sit down and talk about. I was thinking this past weekend about my son who is a junior in high school. We really need to start having some serious conversations about college. A walk together would be the perfect way to discuss this.
You can also make walking with your children a time of fun. It’s a great opportunity to play “I Spy.” Or you can count trees, mailboxes or cars. If your child doesn’t like to sit down at the table and practice their times table, this could be a better time to do it. Be creative in how you can pass the time walking with your children.
Another fun idea is to give your child a pedometer. This can be a great way to motivate your children. It helps them to keep track of how many steps they are taking. You could then set a goal and say something like, “I bet you can’t walk 100 steps.” When they reach 100 steps they will probably be very excited. So then up the ante and say, “I bet you can’t walk 500 steps” and so on.
This is a great way to spend quality time together and to make walking not such a tedious activity. Think of some other ways you can make walking a fun activity.
