How to Make Workouts a Priority During the Holiday Season

If the season’s ho, ho, ho and mistletoe has thrown off your fitness routine you are not alone. Millions of gym goers take a break from exercising during the holidays, much to the chagrin of health experts who maintain that fitness should be a priority regardless of how busy you are.

Fitness gurus say we should all be making time in our day for exercise, especially during the hectic holiday period. Experts say maintaining a workout schedule is even more important this time of year because most of us tend to eat more than usual. As such, doctors recommend not only keeping to your same schedule, but striving to add an extra workout session or two whenever possible.

Easier said than done, right?

To help you stay focused experts have come up with ways to remain fit during the temptation-packed holiday season:

Fitness Opportunities are Everywhere. If you can’t make it to the gym for your daily workout then consider hauling the kids up a hill a few times for a sledding adventure or take the family snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, skating. The trip will provide exercise as well as quality time with loved ones.

Schedule a Vacation. Preferably to a tropical island. Booking a long weekend getaway to a warm destination in January or February will motivate you to keep exercise a priority, especially if you plan to show off your body on the beach.

Work on Time Management. Learn to organize your day the evening before. By prioritizing your tasks beforehand you will be better able to find time to exercise.

Start Power Walking. Walking is an exercise that you can do anywhere, from the park to the mall. What’s more, all you need to get moving is a pair of sneakers and some socks. If you want to make your walk more challenging add a heavy book to a backpack and scout out hilly terrain.
