Dyersville, Iowa has been pretty much a celebrity ghost town since filming wrapped on the hit movie “Field of Dreams” 17 years ago. Now residents there are in for a real treat. The film’s star, Kevin Costner will be returning to the eastern Iowa town. Costner (not an apparition, but the actual living, breathing actor) will be appear August 11 at the Dyersville baseball field (the exact location the movie was shot) as part of a “Rolling Roadshow” tour, in which 10 classic movies are being shown at the sites of their filming.
For Costner is will be a trip down memory lane–he hasn’t returned to the town since its famous cornstalks resurrected Shoeless Joe Jackson and other long-dead ballplayers on the big screen nearly two decades ago. For residents and visitors Costner’s return means getting to meet the star in person before the movie is shown on a 30-foot inflatable screen in the outfield.
Netflix, an online movie rental service that organized the tour, also confirmed that following the movie screening Costner will play a free concert with his unnamed rock band.
“Returning to the ‘Field of Dreams’ location to play a concert … has special meaning for me,” Costner said in a recent news release. “The movie was significant in my career, and the band is an important part of my future.”
“Field of Dreams” was an Academy Award nominee and featured one of the most famous movie lines ever: “If you build it, they will come.”
Dyersville, Iowa is just one of nearly a dozen stops on Netflix’s “Rolling Roadshow” which will be screening popular movies in the locations they helped make famous. For example, the movie “Jaws” will be shown on the shores of Martha’s Vineyard while “Raising Arizona” will be shown in Apache Junction, Arizona. What’s more, each screening will include activities such as scavenger hunts and road rallies. Some screenings will also include cast reunions and question-and-answer sessions with the filmmakers.
