How To NOT Gain Weight During The Holidays

Does the mere mention of the holiday season send you into a panic? If it does, you’re not alone. The holiday season is quickly approaching. For some religions and cultures, they’ve already begun. Many people put on weight during the holiday season. And it’s no wonder—goodies and sweet treats abound. The weather is crisp and people want to fill their stomachs with comfort foods.

So how can you avoid the holiday “ten” this year?

1.Fill up on the veggie tray – it sounds simple but you’d be surprised at how many people never go near the vegetable tray at a holiday get together. If no one is making one, why don’t you bring it this year? And when you go to fill your plate with scrumptious goodies, try filling it half full with veggies right off the bat. I have a sneaking suspicion no one will even notice you’ve taken the veggies. But they will notice when you’re the only one who can still fit into your jeans by the end of winter.

2.Get in a workout – if you work out before a big meal, you’re likely to eat less. If you can’t find the time for the treadmill before your holiday feast, you can still get in some exercise after the meal. At least you’ll burn a few calories, and every calorie counts.

3.Indulge…just a little – the easiest way to pack on the pounds during the holidays, besides diving into everything in sight, is to deny yourself everything in sight so much so that you eventually binge. Instead, go ahead, eat those potatoes and that delicious pie. But stick to the three bite rule. Have no more than three bites (no, not monster bites) of holiday treats then put your fork down. The result? You will be able to have your cake and eat it too—but you won’t pay for it the next morning on the scale.

4.Just say no – This one is hard, especially when cute Aunt Ida insists that you try her dessert. But if you’re full or if you’ve already indulged enough for the day, don’t be afraid to say a polite, “no thank you.” Sure, the hostess might be upset for a minute but in the end, it’s your health.

5.Don’t be afraid to be different – just because everyone else is serving butter-laden potatoes and stuffing, it doesn’t mean you have to. Try an alternative holiday meal—one that will surprise and please your guests and leave you feeling fit and trim the next day.

The holidays don’t have to be stressful. Cut yourself some slack and realize that you may not lose weight over the holidays. But remember that with a few small changes, you don’t have to gain weight, either.
