How to Organize Your Gardening Tools

There are few things that are more difficult and awkward to store than gardening tools. Indeed, gardening tools are dirty, inconsistently sized and often too heavy to lift off of the ground. Because gardening tools are often very dirty, most people do not want to store them inside the home. However, since many people do not have a garage or exterior storage area around the home, it can be difficult to find an alternative solution. Here are some ideas to help you store your gardening tools effectively without making your home dirty.

1. Sort and Organize
Sort and organize all of your gardening tools so that each item is grouped with like items. For example, place those tools that belong in the dirt in one pile and those tools that hold dirt in another. By sorting your tools, you will not only get a very good idea of what items you have to organize, but you will also be more aware of exactly where they are. After the tools are sorted, you can then store then based on their category. When you go to find your tools, you will have an easier time if you know exactly where to look.

2. Keep it simple
Gardening tools are fun to purchase, and there are many types to select from. When buying and using gardening tools, be sure to keep your selection simple. By ensuring that you do not go overboard with your gardening tools, you will have an easier time organizing and finding your tools. What’s more: you will not have to sort through piles of tools that you have never used and do not really need in order to get to those things that are important.

3. Store tools inside
If possible, it would be best to store your gardening tools inside, safe from inclement weather and rain. If you store the tools outside where they are unprotected, you run the risk of having ceramic pots crack in the freezing weather and metal tools rust in the rain. All that you require to keep your tools indoors is a simple storage unit, such as a shed, porch or garage.

4. Create a garage work station
Create a garage work station for your tools and gardening needs. All you need is a small corner of your garage, a work table, a peg board and a small closet. Hang items that are frequently used, such as spades and rakes, from the pegboard. You will be able to access them quickly and without much ado.

Place larger items, such as dirt and sod, inside the closet so that they stay out of the way and easily accessible. You can keep items such as small trays of plants out on the work station table. Be sure to keep the table clear, as clutter will annoy you after awhile and make the indoor station more of a hassle than an enjoyment. Finally, light your area well with large fluorescent lights or good grow lights, if you plan to keep smaller plants indoors.
