We already talked about re-grouting tile instead of replacing it. Doing so is a great way to save money and time. However, if your tile is outdated or simply a color you do not care for, re-grouting may not be enough. If you aren’t able to replace the tile, you can update it with paint.
Yes, you can actually paint tile to freshen it up. Most people assume that it isn’t possible to paint tile. It’s true that you can’t just take a paint brush or roller straight to the tile, but you can paint it if you prepare the surface first.
-Start by sanding the tile until it is no longer glossy. The surface should be slightly rough so paint will adhere. Medium grain sandpaper will work just fine. You can sand by hand, or with a sander. Be sure to wipe away all sanding dust before attempting to paint.
-You must use primer. A good primer is essential, as it will insure better paint coverage. An added benefit is the ability to apply a mold and mildew resistant primer. Just make sure the primer you choose is compatible with the paint you want to use. Ask someone from the home improvement center to help you choose the best primer and paint for your project.
-Make sure the primer is completely dry before applying paint. The drying time suggested on the can should be sufficient, although in high humidity extra drying time may be required.
-You can paint the entire area, grout and all. Painting each tile individually is a time consuming, labor-intensive project. Besides, you would likely have to re-grout afterwards so the grout wouldn’t look dingy next to the freshly painted tile.
-Be sure to allow the paint plenty of time to dry before applying another coat. Also, make sure the paint is cured (dried to a hard finish) before using the area. This is especially important for floors and showers where walking or water could damage the paint finish.
