How to Pick a Potty

The day has finally arrived when you are ready to potty train your child. It is an exciting moment. But did you know that the right potty chair can make the job a lot easier? Here are some things to consider when picking out your first potty.

When you are ready to select a potty, why not take your child with you to the store. many times if the baby is the one picking out the potty, then he or she is more likely to use it. This isn’t a guarantee that your baby will fall in love with a potty and instantly use it, of course, but the baby’s opinion does count in making him or her more comfortable.

The second thing on my list is the safety factor. really examine the potty to make sure that lids won’t slam down on little fingers, that there are no hinges that could pinch, and that there are no sharp edges. The last thing you want during potty training is a traumatic experience for you and your child if he or she becomes hurt.

Third, which goes along with safety is the stability factor. You want to make sure that the potty has rubber tips or lining on the bottom to make sure that it won’t slip along the floor. It should also be strong an stable enough to withstand some abuse. Toddlers will stand, stomp and climb on the potty seat, especially when the lid is closed. Also make sure that the seat is secure. One of our first potty seats could be lifted off of the seat to be used as a booster seat on the regular toilet. The problem was that it kept slipping this way and that on the potty seat whenever a child squirmed a bit.

There are more potty picking tips to come. Check back again to the Baby blog.
