How to Read to Your Baby

In previous articles, I have discussed the importance of reading to your child, even from a very early age. Now you know the benefits of reading to your baby and which books to buy. However, some parents feel uncomfortable reading to a small infant. In this article, I will offer tips on how to read to your baby.

First choose a position that is comfortable for both of you. Many parents prefer to sit the baby in their lap and place the book out in front so they can see. However, if your baby is comfortable lying on his tummy, the book can be propped up on the floor so he can see it when he raises his head. This also encourages your baby to strengthen neck muscles. You can lie on the floor next to him and turn the pages as you read and discuss the pictures. Which ever position you choose, always make sure that the book is close enough to your baby that he can touch it whenever he desires to do so.

Babies greatly focus on voices. They are in tune with various pitches. When your voice sounds excited, they become excited. Change your voice as you read. Use higher and lower pitches. Use silly voices and tones. Remember that it is okay to read a line over and over if your baby enjoys it. Reading the same book over and over again will help your baby become familiar with the pictures and the language. Children never tire of hearing their favorite story.

When you read to your baby is determined by you. Some parents prefer to have a reading routine. They like to read at the same time each day. Many parents read to their babies before bedtime. However, if your baby becomes fussy or seems disinterested in the book, it is okay to stop and try again later. Never force your baby to look at a book. Remember, reading is a special time that babies should enjoy.
