My family has been going through a lunch meat kick lately. They all seem to want cold sandwiches. I think this started because I was getting some very good deals on sliced turkey meat at the grocery store. Still maintaining this new habit can get expensive. Here are my tips for saving money on lunch meat and all of the other items you might find at the deli counter.
Shop the Sales
Before you order your items at the deli counter, take a look at the sales and deals for that week. I usually wind up buying the store brand lunch meat, because the cost is less and it fits our needs perfectly, but sometimes a high-name brand will actually be a better deal. So while you are waiting for your turn, do some cost comparison.
Avoid the Apron
Usually in front of the deli counter, there will be an “apron” of extra goods that the grocery store is hoping will tempt you while you wait for your deli order. Stocked in this area are high priced breads, sauces, chips and condiments. New refrigerated stations are also popping up, loaded with fancy cheese and other items. I’m not against buying gourmet items if you enjoy them, but remember that placement in a grocery store makes all of the difference. Cocktail bread at the deli counter may cost twice as much as a brand over on the bread shelves.
Use Those Coupons
Consider opting for pre-packaged lunch meat, especially if you can combine a sale with a coupon. Coupons sometimes appear for deli counter, items too. You can find these coupons in store flyers or in Sunday inserts. Often they will have a minimum amount to purchase, such as a pound, so check the details of a coupon before you order.
