Spending money on healthcare is one of those inevitable things that you just have to do. So any reasonable way that we can save on this expense will greatly affect our budgets in the positive. Here are some ways that you may be able to save money on healthcare.
Get Insured with Good Coverage
Okay, it may seem strange to tell you to spend in order to save, but good quality insurance will save you in the long run. I spent a period of time with no coverage, and believe me, it was a scary time. I was young and didn’t have a family, so my odds of staying healthy were good, but I was also very lucky. One accident or serious illness, and I could have gone bankrupt.
Spending money on good coverage instead of other material things is a good investment in long term financial security.
Find Free Services
Sometimes you can avoid your normal office visit co-pay by taking advantage of free services offered by clinics and drugstores, such as flu shots, high blood pressure screenings, even cholesterol screenings. Just make sure to update your doctor with the date of the tests or shots and the results.
Call Instead of Visit
If your primary care doctor knows your health history well, and you are in tune with your body, you may be able to get away with a phone call instead of an office visit. For example, I’ve come down with Bronchitis so often, that I know its signs and symptoms. I can usually place a call to my doctor’s nurse and request a prescription instead of having to come in. Of course, she briefs me on when to come in if things get worse, and she follows up in a few days to make sure the medicine works.
