I used to cringe ever time I received or was asked to send a text. That is because I opted out of my texting plan. I figured that I was spending enough on the phone and the data plan, so I didn’t want to add texting as well.
The problem with not having a texting plan is that I was charged an obscene rate each time a text came in or went out. I still don’t have a need for a lot of texting. If you are the same or maybe the opposite (you use more texts than your plan allows) then you might want to find ways to save on texting. Here is what I learned about it.
Say No to Texting
When your texting limits are up, you can take the radical approach and turn off the feature. Most smart phones will allow you to do this. Of course, you’ll have to let everyone know that you won’t be getting or sending texts, and this might not be too practical for you. It is an option if you may be faced with a huge bill at the end of the month.
My friends know that I check email frequently and am available by phone but won’t respond to texts.
Find Free Ways to Text
Believe it or not, there are a number of apps and websites that will allow you to text for free with no strings attached. Some limit the number of free texts while others let you use unlimited texting. Look around and find a free texting service that works best for you. Just be careful about running into any potential scams.
Two services that offer free texting and are legitimate are AOL and Gmail. If you have an AOL or a Gmail account, you can send and receive texts for free, from mobile numbers, using your Mac or PC computer.
