Are your old towels getting a little scratchy but you don’t want to spend a fortune on new towels? Try the following tips to help you save.
Check the beach towel sales
Right now, many stores have beach towels for sale. While they are obviously thinner and larger than standard bath towels, there is no reason why they can’t be used in place of bath towels if you find a great bargain. Beach towels are particularly good for kids coming out of the bath. If you want a thicker towel, simply fold a beach towel in half and sew the ends.
Check the clearance bin
I once found expensive Ralph Lauren washcloths that were thick enough to use as pillows in the clearance bin. They must have been part of a larger collection and were left over when the towels had been purchased. Ten years later, these washcloths still look like new.
Make old towels like new
Good towels should get softer as they age not scratchier. If your towels are scratchy, then chances are it is because they have too many additives in them that are matting down the fibers. No matter how much the fabric softener commercials want to tell you that you’ll get fluffier towels when you use their product, the reality is that fabric softener makes the towels less absorbent.
If you want to reinvigorate your old towels, try this solution. Add white vinegar to the rinse solution when you wash your towels. You may have to repeat this step two or three times depending on how much build up you have.
Turn towels into wash cloths
Even old towels that are unraveling around the edges have some nice usable life left in them. Cut the old towels into wash cloths and stitch up the edges. Even if you don’t want to use these washcloths for the bath (although I promise you they will be quite serviceable), you can use them to wipe sticky faces and hands through out the day.
