Underwear is just one of those things that I refuse to buy used. I know that some others do this quite successfully, but I just cannot get over my squeamishness about it. I am fine getting most other items of clothing used for myself and my family, but I just can’t do underwear.
Because gently used clothes are one of the great ways to reduce the clothing budget, and this is not an option for underwear, I’ve come up with several other ways to save money on underwear. I hope that my tips will help you save money as well.
First of all, no matter where or for how much you purchase your underwear, you will save money when you make sure that you have the proper fit. Underwear that does not fit well will not get used (or your money’s worth). Also, if you plan ahead on fit, you can make your underwear last longer. For example, bras should fit well on the large hook setting. This way, as the band begins to stretch out from wear and washing, you can then use the second set of hooks, until it stretches further when you will then use the third set of hooks.
Proper care of your underwear is important to make it last longer, and therefore replace it less often. Hand wash items if you can (the little extra trouble will yield great savings) or at least wash them on delicate and line dry.
Check out imperfect items at your local outlet store. Imperfect can mean anything including the fact that the tag was placed upside down or the heel of a sock wasn’t in a contrasting color as it was supposed to be! You can get some great savings when you buy imperfect underwear, and I have yet to notice most of the issues that have led the underwear to be labeled imperfect.
Finally, if you are an odd size, you may really clean up at some of the Victoria’s Secret sales that happens bi-annually. They place all of the unsold underwear in cardboard bins by size, and you just dig. Get their early for the best selection. Most of the time, all of the popular sizes are gone, but you may just find what you need (think xxs and 38DD).
