It is tough when you have to choose between buying medication and buying food. But for many, that is a choice that they have to face every month and sometimes every day. Even if you aren’t at that point, you must have noticed that prescription drug prices seems to have risen. Here are some ways that you can save on your prescription drug cost.
Do Your Research
It can be helpful to carry a copy of your prescription drug insurance information when you visit the doctor. This way, you can work with your doctor to find out if there is a medicine in your plan that will work both for your health and your pocketbook. Sometimes similar medications will vary greatly in price and also in how much your insurance company is willing to pay for them.
Generic drugs may cost less, too, but you should check with your doctor because some generics don’t work as well as name brand medication for certain conditions.
Change the Amount
Sometimes you can get more medication for less if your doctor will change the amount of pills in a prescription. Your co-pay may be the same whether you order 15 pills or 45 pills. This isn’t always the case, but if it is, you may be able to take advantage of it. Some pills can be ordered in a higher dosage and then split. Check with your doctor, of course.
Take Advantage of Deals
Many pharmacies offer incentives to switch your prescriptions over to their care. Sometimes these offers require a coupon which may be found in the Sunday inserts or online. Most often, switching your prescription to a different pharmacy will qualify you for a $10-$25 gift card, which may help offset some or all of the cost of the prescription.
