This time of year, everyone wants pumpkins. I am embarrassed to say that one year we wound up spending $50 on pumpkins for decorating. That seems like a lot to me. Of course, a friend of mine thinks that is a bargain. She routinely spends about $200 on pumpkins, hay and other fall decorations for the outside of her home.
I have other things that I would like to spend that money on, although we do like to have our pumpkins. So, if you feel the same way, you might want to read the following tips. They may help you score inexpensive or even free pumpkins.
Fall Events
We are lucky in where we live. our township sponsors a fall festival that includes pumpkin carving, and the pumpkin carving includes free pumpkins. So, we can pick up a couple of them for free. That is a blessing. While I realize this might be hard to find, some checking revealed a few other events and places where pumpkins are either free or free with admission to hay rides, haunted houses, etc. It might be a way to get some free pumpkins.
Advertise
If you have a local pumpkin farm and a home in a popular street, offer up your lawn. In exchange for free advertising (a tasteful sign), allow the farm to create a fall display in a corner of your yard. You get the nice decorating and they get a chance to show off their goods.
Grow Your Own
Pumpkins are relatively easy to grow, depending on where you live of course. I’ve done it before. The one mistake I made was in my seeds. I used seeds from one pumpkin, which meant that the pumpkin vine flowered but didn’t grow pumpkins because the plants were all of one sex! Mix seeds of a few different pumpkins, and you’ll be able to harvest your own pumpkins for your decorating.
