How to Score a Free Hotel Room in Europe

Okay, there’s a catch… actually, a couple of catches. But, the concept behind the free stay is so clever I had to share it.

The spirit of the Christmas season hasn’t been lost on a hotel chain in the United Kingdom that’s offering married couples whose names are Joseph and Mary a free room at any of its properties.

The UK’s Travelodge chain says if you can prove that your name is Mary or Joseph and you are indeed legally wed you will get a free room at the inn. Technically, you will be given a free night at one of the chain’s 300 plus locations throughout the United Kingdom from Christmas Eve through January 5th.

The other catch — you have to be British citizens.

So get on the horn to your British friends and relatives…

Finally, it’s not a free night, but some prime New York City hotels are offering great savings for travelers needing a place to stay on a Sunday night.

I detailed the Big Apple’s tourist board’s “Sunday Stays” program in a previous blog and now I am happy to announce that it is expanding. The deal features 20% to 30% off room rates on Sundays. (According to the NYC & Company, the city’s Sunday occupancy rate drops an average 20% from Saturday nights.) Some properties are also offering free breakfast, parking or other perks with the deal.

If you plan to be in the New York City area any time soon take note of the following lodgings.

Hotels that have just joined the promotion include: The Alex, The Benjamin, Chambers, Doubletree Guest Suites Times Square, Doubletree Metropolitan Hotel, Embassy Suites Hotel New York, Hilton Garden Inn Times Square, Hilton New York, Jumeirah Essex House, Millenium Hilton Hotel, The New York Helmsley Hotel, New York LaGuardia Airport Marriott, New York Marriott at the Brooklyn Bridge, New York Marriott East Side, New York Marriott Financial Center, New York Marriott Marquis, Renaissance New York Hotel Times Square, The Ritz-Carlton New York Battery Park, The Ritz-Carlton New York Central Park.

Hotels that have been in program from the start include: The Algonquin Hotel, Dream New York, Grand Hyatt New York, Hilton Garden Inn New York/Staten Island, Le Parker Meridien New York, Loews Regency Hotel, The Mansfield, Millennium Broadway Hotel New York, Paramount Hotel New York, Sheraton New York Hotel & Towers, Shoreham Hotel, The Carlton on Madison Avenue, The London NYC, Hotel Plaza Athenee, The Roosevelt Hotel, The Sherry-Netherland, The Time Hotel, The Westin New York at Times Square and the five W New York hotels.
