How To Spice Up Family Photos

Believe it or not I just received a Valentine’s Day card in the mail. It’s shocking; not because it’s March, but because technically it’s a Christmas card. My friend’s belated holiday greeting went from being a Christmas card to a New Year’s newsletter to a Valentine’s Day wish and ended up being a combination of all three.

Regardless of when it arrived it was a nice surprise and worth mentioning in this blog because of the unique family photo that was enclosed in the card.

Forget about posing for the traditional family portrait with the entire clan standing in front of the fireplace or on the staircase with the shorter people in the front and the taller ones in the back, and everyone dressed in their Sunday best with cheesy grins plastered to their faces—–not this photo.

My pal had a photographer take a picture of her entire family sitting in a tree (“The Family Tree”) with her youngest ones perched on the lower branches and the older one just above them. At the very top of the leafless tree my friend and her husband are perched on the same branch looking a bit like two squirrels with the most natural looking smiles on their faces. (I’ve often compared her three kids to Alvin and the Chipmunks, which makes the setting even more appropriate.)

Now that’s a creative family photo.

It certainly has inspired me to spice up my family’s shots.

What does your most recent family portrait look like? I’m sure it depicts a nice clean-cut family, but how original is the pose? And what does it say about your family?

If you are looking to spice up your next family photograph consider choosing a theme that would make the picture more interesting. Or ask yourself what makes your family unique and make that the focus of your shot. Think about some of the activities your family likes to do together and turn that into your photo theme. For example, if your family likes to go camping, arrange for the portrait to be taken during your next campout. Or, if you fish together as a family take a portrait on the water.

What would be the ideal backdrop your family photo?
