Does everyone rave about your mashed potatoes? Do you make the best jams and jellies? Do you know how to create the ultimate birthday cake? Maybe it is time to consider establishing a home-based food business.
When you do something that you love, you tend to do it well. Why not take your cooking and or baking skills one step further and make some money from it? Here is what you need to know.
The first thing you will need to do is to identify your food business. What do you want to make, to whom do you want to sell your food and how or where do you want to sell it? Do you want to make prepared meals for busy families, put up preserves from an abundance of harvested fruit, or bake cakes and cookies? Do you want to sell your food on the Internet, at a Farmer’s market, at community shows or simply through word of mouth?
Figure out what laws might apply to your business. This all depends on what you are selling, how you are selling it and to whom you are selling your food. That is why the first step is so important. There are certain rules and regulations. Some types of sales may require a professional, inspected kitchen, while others don’t have those restrictions. You can call your local or state government to get answers, or ask your questions of others who are already established in the same or similar food business.
Create your business plan. You’ll need to know how to price your goods (do your research), how much you will produce and any particular business strategies that you want to apply. Having everything laid out, including goals, can take away the guesswork and help keep you on track with your business.
Create a brand for your product. A logo or an image helps, but you will at least need a business name to promote. Figure out ways to make your brand identifiable and positive. This includes some marketing of your products. Maybe you want to give away recipes that show how your product could be used, offer free samples, etc.
