How To Wax Your Eyebrows

I must confess: I never paid much attention to my eyebrows until my friend Gwen cornered me in the ladies’ room and plucked me. After that, I started to worry about the Dreaded Unibrow. I submitted to a professional eyebrow waxing a few times, but at $15 per session, it wasn’t something I could put in the budget all the time.

You can wax your eyebrows at home, and it’s pretty quick and easy. I have relatively sensitive skin, and I haven’t had any problems after waxing — so if you’re feeling brave and want to give it a try, go for it! It really isn’t hard.

  1. Wash your face and pat dry.
  2. Brush your eyebrow into place with a baby toothbrush or a mascara wand (or an eyebrow brush if you have one). Take a look at the natural shape of your eyebrow.
  3. Use an eyeliner pencil to mark where you do and don’t want to apply wax. It’s always a good idea to take less hair off than you think you want to — if you take too much, you can’t put it back. Use the bridge of your nose as a guide for where you want to wax that unibrow. As for the brow itself, shape from below, not above.
  4. Now it’s wax time. Many waxing kits come with a tub of wax that you heat in water or the microwave, an applicator, and removal strips. Warm the wax and apply a thin layer in the direction the hair grows — usually upward on the bridge of the nose and outward under the eyebrow. Don’t put too much wax on the applicator or it can drip. Don’t let the wax dry!
  5. Place the removal strip onto the wax and pat or rub to make sure everything sticks. Hold your skin taut with one hand and pull the strip off with the other. Pull in the opposite direction the hair grows. Yes, it’s going to sting. But it’s also WAY faster than plucking each hair individually.
  6. You can use tweezers to grab any stray hairs that didn’t come off with the wax.
  7. Apply a soothing lotion or cream and you’re done!

You’ll be amazed at how much difference a little hair removal and eyebrow shaping can make. The first time I waxed my eyebrows, several people commented on me looking different without knowing why.
