We are in the middle of fixing up our dining room, complete with a new dining room table, a set of six chairs, and all of the tablecloths, place mats and decorative touches. We’ve already installed a new lighting fixture. One thing we haven’t done is to spend a lot of money on any of this. Here is how.
First, we scouted around for a dining room set that we liked. We finally agreed on one that was cherry wood with simple lines. We knew that it needed to seat at least five (6) on a daily basis and be expandable to seat at least ten for family gatherings. We found a table that we liked, but it cost $2,500, more than we wanted to spend.
Before we found the table, we did find a lighting fixture on sale at out local Lowes and saved about $60 on it. We also used a coupon for an additional $20 off.
Next, we scoured places for used furniture, such as Craigslist, and yard sales. We did find a dinning room set in almost new condition at a recent yard sale for the price of $500, saving us $2,000.
Next, we hit a discount store called Marshalls/Home Goods. They offer items that are overages from other stores. It is here where we are getting most of our accessories. The are discounted up to 70 percent off of a regular retail price. Accessories can often be tough to get used, so shopping at a nice discount store means that we can often get exactly what we like. One item, for example, was a serving platter. We spotted a similar one at Williams Sonoma for $85. The one at Home Goods was $7.99.
When you are setting up a room with furniture, a great way to save is to go neutral on the actual furniture, and then brighten it up with accessories. This way, you can change your look without changing out the large expensive pieces.
