How’s Your Competency?

There is just no way we are going to be super stars and experts at every element of our home businesses—even the most amazing among us has some weaknesses. BUT, we can strive to achieve a satisfactory level of competency when it comes to all the pieces and parts of operating our home businesses.

Being proficient and capable at things like bookkeeping, record keeping, marketing, networking, sales, cold calls, business communications, and all sorts of other things that might not be things we feel particularly talented at—is one of the important aspects to being a successful business owner. Again, it doesn’t mean we have to be perfect or even exemplary—but we can strive to achieve a satisfactory level of proficiency and competence. In fact, since we are usually the only people operating our businesses, it is incredibly important that we push ourselves to learn things that might not come naturally. We really HAVE to become reasonably competent at all facets of business—even the things we don’t particularly like.

Lacking in competency in some areas? Consider taking a class or checking out community resources available to small business owners. There are classes available in most towns and communities for everything from basic bookkeeping, to investing, to computer programs. If you are lucky enough to have some business mentors, or colleagues who are experts in areas where you are weak, you might be able to talk them into training with you. Perhaps you can offer to trade training in something you are great at for what it is you need to learn.

Increasing your competency level will not only pay off in terms of your business operations, but also in your personal confidence and self-esteem. The more you understand and grasp all manner of your business operations, the more you will feel comfortable taking risks and meeting client needs.
