Well, we made it though Hurricane Sandy, and while our area is still seeing some of the after effects of this historic storm, we are in good shape. and well fed.
When you are in the middle of a hurricane or in its aftermath, the food you eat should be easy to prepare, comforting, and in some cases, assembled without the use of the stovetop or oven. Stock up on the following items and use these tips to make sure that you can feed your family when you shelter in place.
Canned Soup and Stew
Easy to heat and easy to eat, canned soup and stew or instant soup can provide a hearty meal with little effort. Pair it with some bread or fresh carrots.
Peanut Butter
Peanut butter, which does not require refrigeration, can be used to make sandwiches for the kids, of course, but you can also use it over noodles with a couple of extra ingredients for cold sesame noodles. There are many different recipes out there for this dish, from the simple to the sublime. FInd one that you like, prepare the sauce ahead of the storm, or even during if you have a small gas burner or other way to heat a few ingredients.
Pasta and Veggies
Pasta can be enjoyed cold if need be and can be a good source of energy. Pair it with canned or fresh vegetables, garlic and oil or just butter if that is all that you have on hand. Fresh vegetables can also be used for snacking. Try baby carrots, broccoli, mushrooms, celery (also with peanut butter), peppers and more.
Instant Oatmeal
Just heat up a little water and you have breakfast or a snack that is warm and comforting. You can make your own instant oatmeal by putting regular oats into a food processor and pulsing. Then add some mix ins, such as brown sugar for flavor.
