I Am So Thankful for All of the Animal Lovers Out There

Appropriately enough, November, the month that harbors Thanksgiving, is “I Am So Thankful Month.”

I’m a big believer in the power of gratitude. I didn’t always used to be that way though.

What I Used to Think of Thanksgiving

Once upon a time I thought Thanksgiving was the absolute most boring holiday imaginable.

So what if the Pilgrims and Indians came together and had a feast? Big deal. What did that matter in our modern world? In my eyes, the only redeemable quality about the Thanksgiving holiday was the four-day weekend.

What Thanksgiving Means to Me Now

But in 1999, my friend Piper gave me a book I’ve often referred to within my articles: Sarah Ban Breathnach’s Simple Abundance: A Daybook of Comfort and Joy. That’s when I was introduced to the concept of gratitude…and keeping track of it in a gratitude journal.

Ever since I started tracking all my blessings, I experience Thanksgiving on a daily basis. It’s completely reformed my life –the way I look at it, the way I celebrate it, the way I honor it.

Now Thanksgiving Day is my most cherished, sacrosanct day of the year.

That’s why I was excited to learn November is “I Am So Thankful Month.” I didn’t know that until a few days ago. Even more reason to celebrate!

Why I Am So Thankful for Animal Lovers

I don’t even want to venture a guess as to how many hundreds of thousands of species of animals there are in the world. It’s probably way beyond hundreds of thousands and is more like in the millions. Maybe billions.

Some are endangered, some are not. Some need homes, some don’t. Some are mistreated and neglected, some are extremely well cared for.

I am so thankful for all of the people who take time to remember the animals. Who are kind to them. Who try to help save them when we humans invade, destroy, or contaminate their habitats. For those who stop and rescue strays, or who volunteer at or start shelters. For all of the activist organizations who strive to enforce animal rights. For all of the people who take the time to adopt pets and bring them into their families.

I am grateful because the people who take the time to care and put their hearts into action are making the world a better place.
