Teachers can sometimes have a bad reputation. In most cases the media only reports bad situations that some teachers gets themselves into or low tests that some schools can receive.
However, teaching is a good profession. I am proud to be a teacher and I stand behind public education. I feel that bad teachers are out just like bad persons in any other job. Likewise there are bad teachers in private schools, charter schools, and home schools.
Today, I want to take an opportunity to be thankful for my job.
I am thankful that every day is different. Children do come off of assembly lines. My job is not emotionless as some. During my day I am given the chance to laugh, smile, get frustrated, angry, and tearful.
I am thankful that being a teacher allows me to see progress in my work. I can see children learn to read, write, and learn. I do not have to go home and feel that my day was meaningless. I know that I make a difference because I can see it in the eyes of a child.
I am thankful that my job is endless. There will always be children. Each year a new group comes in and I have more work that needs to be done. I do not have to worry about the need for education to be obsolete or my product going out of style.
I am thankful for the long term progress of my job. I not only can see my work today but my work continues tomorrow and into the future. I see students out in the work force and I know that I am a part of what they have become.
I am thankful for the relationships I create. Through my years I have created some very special bonds with children and with families. Few jobs allow the closeness with families that teaching allows.
I am thankful for children.
I am thankful that I am a teacher.
