No, I don’t hate my teenage daughter. But I’m sure the title of this blog captured your attention.
This is actually the title of a new show coming to FOX, starting November 30th. I happened to see a preview of it this week.
In the preview you see two mothers sitting together, talking about their teenage daughters. But all you hear is negativity. Granted, it’s supposed to be a comedy but I actually found the dialog a bit unnerving.
Once again the world of sitcom is tackling an important relationship in such a way that it doesn’t promote any sort of positivity. It is just as marriages are portrayed in so many sitcoms, negatively.
It’s frustrating to see shows like this produced. But then it’s even more frustrating when people watch them.
I was curious, however, about the premise of this show so I had to look it up. After all, maybe the preview wasn’t showing the real intent behind it…maybe there is a positive message to it after all.
In a nutshell, it’s about two single moms who are best friends, each trying to navigate through the murky waters of raising teenage daughters. One of the mothers is supposed to have come from a religious background, one that was strict and confining. So she ends up parenting the exact opposite way, allowing her daughter to pretty much do whatever she wants.
Add to the drama, these girls are given anything they want…material-wise that is. So what that creates are two very unkind teenage girls who think the world owes them something.
And to add a little spice to the mix, you get not just your typical teenage attitude but one of the girls mocks her mother and does whatever she can to embarrass her. Nice.
Not a show I want to watch, nor would I want my daughter to watch. I realize we live in a different day and age, but I sure wouldn’t mind seeing a more positive sitcom on television.
As for me, I LOVE my teenage daughter!
