Title: I Love You, Stinky Face
Author: Lisa McCourt
Artist: Cyd Moore
Price: $10.85 at Amazon.com
I received this book through the mail as a promotion offer. I wasn’t sure how great it would be but I was pleasantly surprised. It quickly became a favorite of both my children and me. My son, age 6, enjoys it just as much as my two year old.
The story starts with a child lying in bed, it’s hard to tell if it’s a boy or girl, asking his/her mother, “Do you love me?” The mother of course replies that she does. Then the child asks his/her mother, “Would you love me if I were a skunk named Stinky Face?” The mother then tells him what she would do if he/she were a skunk and how much she would still love him/her.
The theme repeats itself as the child pretends to be everything from a dinosaur to an alien. Every time the mother’s response is the same that she would love her child no matter what.
The pictures are delightful, colorful, and very detailed. The child often resembles the creatures he pretends to be and the creatures resemble the child. For example when the child becomes a swamp monster he/she stands with the sheets hanging from his arms like swamp moss and the swamp monster wears his/her pajamas.
The story is one that both parent and child can enjoy reading as the theme reassures the child that their parent will always love them just as the child’s mother in the story always loves him/her. The story is a great way to say, “I love you.”
She has also written “It’s Time for School, Stinky Face”, “I Miss You, Stinky Face”, and “Merry Christmas, Stinky Face”. Each contains the same detailed, colorful pictures, by artist Cyd Moore, and delightful, familiar prose.
