I have really enjoyed reading the recent posts about writing that were written by my fellow home business bloggers Stephanie Romero and Richele McFarlin, who are both writers. I, too, am a writer and sometimes I wonder what people think when I tell them that that is what I do for work. Whenever someone does ask what I do, I explain it thoroughly yet briefly since I am not one to go on and on about myself. I simply say that I’m primarily a stay at home mom, and I practice law and do freelance writing work on a part time basis. No one has ever asked me about how many books I have written, which is a relief since I have yet to write a single one. I just say that I do a variety of writing work, including blogging and writing product descriptions.
I have been pleasantly surprised at how people have responded when I tell them that I am a writer. They always want to know how I got started, and I always tell them the truth. A month or so after my son was born, I was thinking about how I could earn money working at home during the specific hours that my duties as a parent left me free to work. During my home-based business idea generating thought process, I thought about the things that I know how to do well. I knew that I had good research skills and that I could write articles and other fact – based pieces, so I started there and looked for that kind of work. Later on, I realized that I could also write creatively and started looking for work as a blogger. Once I had gotten some writing work, I realized that I can always find more as I need it. More importantly, I realized that I really love it and I can see myself doing it long after I am able to return to law practice full time when my children are a bit older.
While there is no real sizzling back story behind my path to becoming a writer, perhaps I can inspire others to give writing a try by illustrating that writers come to the work of writing from all different paths. Each person that chooses to develop himself or herself as a writer has a unique voice that has a place in the world. If a person wants to write just for fun, that is wonderful and they should absolutely do it. If a person wants to write to earn money, I would encourage them to explore the many types of writing work that people can be hired to do.
