I Was a Male War Bride and His Girl Friday

Cary Grant stars as Henri Rochard, a French officer, in “I Was a Male War Bride,” made in 1949 and set in Germany just after World War II. Henri has worked quite a bit with Lt. Catherine Gates (Ann Sheridan) throughout the war, and as they are being shipped home, they realize they are in love with each other. He wants to come home to America with her, but it all presents a problem. They want to bring him home on Army transport, but he can’t travel with Catherine because she’s supposed to be sailing on a ship full of nurses, no men allowed.

Henri objects, quite a bit. They’re newlyweds! Why can’t he travel with his wife? Soldiers can bring home war brides; why can’t Catherine bring home a war husband?

Finally, Henri dons a nurse’s uniform and comes on board the ship posing as a really strange-looking woman. It’s not the most flattering outfit he’s ever worn, but he’ll do whatever it takes to get to be with the woman he loves.

This is a great movie, full of comedy and romance. It was unrated.

His Girl Friday” was made in 1940, and stars Cary Grant opposite Rosalind Russell. Newspaper editor Walter Burns (Grant) was once married to reporter Hildy Johnson (Russell). She’s ready to remarry and retire, but Walter wants her back, not only as his wife, but as a reporter. When a criminal escapes from the nearby jail, Walter calls upon Hildy to cover just one last story, knowing she’s got newspaper ink in her blood and won’t be able to turn him down. Her fiancé, played by Ralph Bellamy, spends the whole movie trying to drag her off, but she realizes in the end where she really belongs. This film has a lot of fast-paced, witty dialogue and you’ve got to listen carefully to catch all the jokes. At one point, Walter tells the fiancé that he looks a lot like Ralph Bellamy. Little jibes like this are imbedded all through the film, making it one of the most famous Cary Grant ever made.

This film is not rated either.
