Ideas for Leftover Bread

Don’t throw that bread away! There are so many wonderful ideas to use it up into wonderful dishes. Whether you want breakfast or dinner, a snack or a treat, leftover bread can be made into food either savory or sweet.

Here are some ideas that you can use when you have some leftover bread around.

Classics

There are some definite classic uses for leftover bread. In fact, these dishes actually are improved if the bread is stale. One of the best known uses for leftover bread is french toast. This is such a hit in our house that I intentionally purchase stale texas toast (and get a great deal on it) on a regular basis to use for french toast.

Another classic use for leftover bread is as croutons. Make your own yummy croutons from your leftover bread and you’ll wonder why on earth you ever both them hard and tasteless from a box.

Soup

There is more than one way to use leftover bread. One idea that isn’t usually thought about is in soup. There is the classic french onion soup that includes a nice piece of leftover bread, but also consider other options, such as an Italian tomato bread soup using toasted bread cubes (a la large croutons) a can of whole tomatoes and your favorite seasonings and spices.

Sweet Treats

Bread is by nature ready to be a yummy treat, as anyone who enjoys fresh bread right out of the oven will attest. But why not try one of the favorite uses in our home for a snack or even an indulgent breakfast. Toast slices and spread them with chocolate hazelnut spread (Nutella). Top with bananas to have everyone licking their fingers in no time.

Appetizing Appetizer

I learned about this little appetizer from an ingenious friend in college who had to come up with party food on a very limited budget. Cut up leftover slices of bread into finger food sized squares. Mix mayo, parmesan and dried diced onions into a spread. Spread the mixture on to the bread then broil for a couple of minutes. Yum.
