Ideas for Summer Fitness

Photographer: Reg Mckenna

It’s time to start thinking about summer fitness. It’s the perfect time of year to try something new and to really enjoy the outdoors.

One of the best ideas for summer fitness is swimming. While having fun, you get in a really great workout. Get in a few laps, play some games in the pool with your kids or join a water aerobics class. There is nothing better than a day of splashing in the sun.

But don’t think of swimming or water sports as something relegated to a pool. What about some adventure kayaking or canoeing? If you are really brave you could try out water skiing. Water offers so many fun ways to get in a nice workout.

There are even things you can do in your own backyard that will give you a workout. What about some badminton, volleyball or kicking a soccer ball around? Play some baseball or basketball. Jump on the kids’ trampoline. Think of things you can do right at home where the whole family is engaged.

Hiking is another great summer activity that will burn a lot of calories. Pick a beautiful trail or hike in the mountains. Jog, bike or walk along a lake or pond.

Try a hand at golf, even if its just miniature golf you are still moving about. There are so many ways that you can have a really great summer and keep that body moving.

Fitness is about more than just focusing on exercise for a certain period of time. It is about an active lifestyle and with summer, there are just so many ways you can do this.

Don’t forget though, you need to keep yourself hydrated. So make sure you always have plenty of water on hand. And don’t forget to stretch because you can be injured doing any one of these summer activities.
