Flowers and chocolate are traditional Mother’s Day gifts, so why not combine the two to create an extra special treat for mom on her special day?
The following projects are ideal for tweens and teens to work on alone. Younger kids can craft the sweet treats for mom with help from dad or another adult family member or friend.
CHOCOLATE FLOWERS
Materials:
Silk ferns
3 silk roses
6 candy bars
Wrapping paper
6 plastic floral cardholders
Green tissue paper
Ribbon
Directions:
Wrap candy bars with gift paper. Try to use different color wrapping paper for each candy bar.
Attach wrapped candy bars to plastic floral cardholders.
Place several sheets of green tissue paper at a diagonal and place ferns, silk roses and candy inside.
Wrap tissue around flowers and tie with bow.
Present bouquet to mom on Mother’s Day.
EDIBLE SLIPPERS
Ingredients:
2 halves of an oval sandwich cookie (Cameos work well)
1 doughnut hole
Store bought frosting
Shredded coconut tinted with red food coloring
Pink decorators’ gel
Directions:
Separate two halves of an oval sandwich cookie and remove the filling with a butter knife.
Slice a doughnut hole into thirds.
Coat the rounded sides of the two end pieces with frosting (eat or discard the middle piece of the donut hole).
Roll the frosted donut ends in shredded coconut tinted with red food coloring to create a pair of fuzzy slipper tops.
Use a dab of frosting to stick each slipper top to a cookie slipper “sole”, then embellish the edges of the cookies with pink decorators’ gel to create little stitches on the slipper.
Place on a plate and serve to mom on Mother’s Day or wrap them in pretty cellophane bags and pass out to the special ladies in your life, as a thank you for all they do in the course of a year.
