iDisguise: Does Your iPod Need Security?

Worried about your child’s iPod being stolen?

I recently received a message from the company idisguise. The company has created a collection of cases, that disguise your iPod as a container of candy. The product only works fro iPod Nano’s, and is essentially an Altoids can with a little padding.

Once inside, the idea is other people will simply think your Nano is a package of mints, and not be inclined to steal it. Decent idea in principal, kid wise though I would almost think your just as likely to have your can of Altoids taken out of your book bag as you are your Nano.

None the less, the iDisguise offers you a theft deterrent option for your mp3 player. The case can be purchased for $11 off their website, and is available in peppermint as well as wintergreen, if flavors concern you.

Personally, I can’t really imagine why you would buy this. The cheapskate in me just says, “Go buy a can of Altoids, then use the can to store your iPod.” The iDisguise is a good idea, and in their defense has some padding in it to protect your iPod from bumps and bruises along the way. The padding is worth some of the cost, but I’m not sure $11 worth of it.

Is theft a big issue with iPods in your area?

iPods are high dollar items, so I can imagine that they carry some sort of risk of theft, but I don’t know that the risk is big enough to warrant going undercover with your iPod in a candy can. I’ve never actually heard of anyone having their iPod stolen, except a few high profile cases on the news where someone was beaten badly for their iPod etc. I think everyone I know now more than likely owns one of the mp3 players, and no one has ever come to me to tell me about losing one.
