Illness and Pregnancy

It finally happened. After coming in contact with countless sick family, friends, and random people, my pregnant body had enough. Now I have a cold. Although I am not sure how or from whom I contracted the virus, I do know that being sick while pregnant is not fun at all.

In the midst of holiday get-togethers and the consumption of holiday related sugary treats, my immune system became susceptible to the various cold viruses on the prowl this winter season. After a twenty four hour runny nose, I thought I had beat the bug. Alas, after several unsuccessful attacks, another virus took hold of my system and now I have a nasty cold. Like most colds, the one I have has manifested itself by way of lots of congestion particularly in my sinuses and chest. I have spent the last few days blowing my nose and coughing. The coughing is particularly bothersome to my unborn daughter as she squirms every time I have a coughing attack. I know that the virus has to run it’s course but I am desperate for it’s course to be short!

To help remedy this cold I have made some changes to my diet and my supplement intake. After consulting with my midwife about what is safe to take during pregnancy, I started boosting my vitamin C intake; one thousand milligrams twice a day for four days. I am also taking elderberry zinc lozenges. I night I put a few drops of oregano oil under my tongue and vapor rub on my chest and throat. I have cut out sugar and most dairy. No more lattes and I am limiting my yogurt consumption too. I have increased my citrus consumption and have found ways to get raw garlic into my diet as well, either in salsa or pasta sauce. Finally, I am drinking lots of tea! A little extra sleep cannot hurt either!

I just hope that I can shorten the run of this virus, I do not want to inadvertently delay labor because I am sick!
