I’m Breaking Up with My Razor

Dear Razor: It’s not you, it’s me. My needs are changing as I get older, and you’re just not right for me anymore. Love, Aimee.

That’s right, I’m back on the market — for a new hair removal technique.

I’ve been a razor girl for a long time. My first razor was electric, but I never really felt like I got a close enough shave. When I switched to a disposable (single blade), the difference was amazing and wonderful. Then came the double blades… the triple blades… the quads and quints.

I guess my skin is getting more sensitive as I get older, because even a brand new razor leaves me with painful razor burn these days. By the time my legs recover, it’s just about time to shave again. No thanks! I’m going to try out some other options and see how they work.

What’s on my list of razor-free hair removal techniques:

  • Waxing. I already wax my eyebrows, and love how quick and easy it is. I don’t know that waxing my legs will be quick — you might have noticed that legs are somewhat bigger than eyebrows are — but it’s worth a try. Not sure how I’ll feel about the pain aspect, but if it’s easier on my skin, it might be worth it.
  • Hair removal creams. I’ve always been kind of skeptical of things like Nair and other depilatory creams. Still, I’m willing to try it. The new “buffing mitts” have the added bonus of exfoliation while you get rid of hair.
  • Electrolysis. A few years ago, I had a coupon for a free fifteen minute session. The process definitely comes with some weird sensations, and the short session wasn’t really enough for me to get a good idea of what the final product would be like. Maybe it’s time to give it another shot… if finances allow.
  • Laser hair removal. Probably not something I want to spend money on right now, but it’s probably a less painful alternative to electrolysis.

First up, I’ll try the do-it-yourself options: depilatory creams and waxing. I’ll let you know if we hit it off and I start a new relationship.
