I’m Not Pregnant, I’m Fat

I assume when people see me they can tell I’m overweight. For this reason it blows me away when I get questioned about being pregnant. Do I really look pregnant? Can’t people tell the difference?

I remember when I was very young I was at my grandma’s home. Her neighbor who was very heavy had just left for her house. I asked my grandma if the lady was pregnant. I remember her telling me she was so glad I asked then and not while the lady was standing there. She explained the lady was overweight and we should never ask someone if they’re pregnant in case they’re not. For this reason it floors me that people will have the audacity to ask such a question.

I was at a discount store with my good friend who was around six or seven months pregnant. She is a thin build but had a nice, cute round tummy. She and I placed our purchases for her unborn son on the counter, and the sales man asked me when I was due! Coldly, I told him I was not pregnant and he covered his mouth and laughed in nervous embarrassment. My friend, being the good friend she is assured me, with disgust for the man’s boldness, that I didn’t look pregnant. The reality is, I hold weight around my belly and too many people think it looks otherwise.

My husband and I adopted our children. We started the adoption path prior to our fertility investigation. As a result of some inconclusive testing, I believed it was likely my body that was infertile. Just months before our first son was placed, curiosity got the better of my husband so he went in for testing and found out he was sterile. This made the pregnancy comments that much more annoying and a bit hurtful.

While we were waiting for our adoptive placement, I fantasized a conversation in my mind where a person asks me when I’m due. Instead of telling them I’m not pregnant, I tell them, “I’m really not sure. We’ve been waiting for our baby four years now. We’re praying they come soon!”
