Improvement by Accident

I tend to write about operating a home-based business as if everything can be controlled and organized with just a bit of planning—as if a good business plan and a strong budget, not to mention plenty of focus and effort—and your business will be on the steady incline. I wanted to pay homage to the reality that sometimes, improvements and growth happen in our business pretty much by seemingly complete accident.

If necessity is the mother of invention, I think that accidents are often what prompts some interesting improvements and changes in direction—not only in our businesses but in life in general. Of course, we could argue philosophies about whether “true accidents” ever really happen—but just for the sake of my article here, let’s say that some great things can happen in our home businesses seemingly out of the blue. We might stumble upon a new vendor or client while waiting for our mocha at the coffee shop, or we may meet someone who becomes a business partner at a cocktail party. One never knows. I have also found that a certain amount of trial and error reveals itself in my business operations and I accidently find a new way of doing something or click on a web site and find a whole new avenue opening up in my business direction.

Maybe it is chance, maybe luck, or maybe it really is fate. But, I do think that we don’t always have to try to drive and control everything in our businesses AND we may find that even our well-thought-out plans can’t be enough to stop something wonderful and exciting from happening in our businesses—all by accident. New insight and improvements really can come from just about anywhere—and sometimes when you least expect it.
