Improving Memory with Yoga

Improving memory is a common goal at all ages, but especially as we begin to age and naturally worry about mental function. Yoga increases perception and enhances memory and mental function.

There are several ways that yoga helps to improve memory. The asanas in yoga help to increase oxygen and blood circulation in the body. This also benefits the brain. Increased oxygen and blood circulation help the mind function at the optimum level.

Certain yoga asanas can help bring oxygen to the brain. Inversions help to bring oxygen rich blood to the brain. In addition to inversions, flowing sequences, such as Sun Salutations and Vinyasa flow classes, help to get the blood flowing and increase oxygenation of the body and brain. This helps improve concentration and memory.

Yoga increases focus and improves concentration. This increased focus and concentration in yoga helps to extend the attention span. This technique can work for kids for better memory in school or to retain mental function as we age.

Yoga energizes the body, which helps to stimulate the brain. Fatigue can impair brain function and the regular practice of yoga can increase energy levels, which offers benefits for mental function. When you are more alert and the brain is calm and focused, you will find you are better able to concentrate and retain information.

In addition to the asanas in your yoga practice, the Pranayama breathing exercises in yoga help to improve memory and concentration. This is another reason to focus on the breath throughout your yoga practice and during meditation sessions.

Another way yoga helps to enhance memory is by reducing stress. There is abundant scientific evidence that shows the brain does not work at the optimum level when under stress. By reducing stress, you relax the mind and body, which increases memory.
