You don’t have to look far these days to view horrific self photos. Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms are home to some of the worst self portraits on Earth. Viewing photo after photo of people posing in front of mirrors that also prominently reveal the cameras they’re using to document the scene is pretty pathetic.
Professional photographers will be the first to tell you that snapping a stunning self portrait takes a combination of good equipment and even better timing. While they may look like a snap to take, exceptional self shots are an art that requires practice to master. Start by concentrating on composition. Decide whether you want to take a full-length, three-quarter length or close-up shot of yourself. Then, consider whether a prop or two are necessary to add to the composition. Next, make sure you are camera ready. Check over the fine details, such as hair, make-up and clothing before stepping in front of the camera.
Speaking of the camera, it is imperative that it is set-up properly to insure a decent shot. You can create a flattering angle by placing the camera slightly above eye level or higher. By doing this you can elongate your neck. Also, don’t look directly into the camera. Instead, stand or sit with your body at a 45-degree angle to the camera. This will add depth to the shot and enhance your overall look.
Since you will likely be using the self portrait feature on your camera it is a good idea to use an object, such as a stuffed animal or a chair as a stand-in while you adjust the camera settings. If your camera has a focus lock, use it to center your mock subject, then proceed to take the portrait.
Finally, don’t forget the tripod. While you could set-up your camera on a flat, solid surface, a tripod works even better for self portraits, as it is specifically designed to keep your camera steady when making minute adjustments.
