Christmas Eve has been and gone in Australia. This Christmas Eve was a bit different to previous years. We didn’t go the carols service as we normally do on Christmas Eve. This year we just spent the time at home doing those last minute cooking jobs and wrapping presents one of the things that usually is left till around midnight Christmas Eve.
This year we had been told about Christmas lights in the neighborhood, so we decided to take a walk. Our little dog thought it was a hugely exciting event, as we never normally go walking at night. So we walked and looked at all the lights. Some people must have spent many hours stringing lights and putting up decorations outside their houses. But the thing that struck Mick and me was, what is it about Christmas that says good taste goes out the window?
As we looked at some of the displays, colorful as they were, we both thought it was a shame they hadn’t known when to stop. Some of the individual display items were lovely but then when combined with the excess of colored lights, turned into something else again. And doesn’t that seem to be a recipe almost for Christmas for many people. They spend more and more buying more and more presents or more expensive presents for spouse and family. On the radio the other day I was horrified by a report of the amount people were going to spend on their children. It was hundreds of dollars per child.
That’s something our children have never known and I don’t think they’ve missed out on a thing. What they’ve had instead is two parents who love each other and them and show it by time spent together. They may not have had everything in the latest technology and games etc but they had our love, time, support, encouragement, guidance and spiritual upbringing over their years growing up. When it comes to excess to me these are there things we need to go overboard with to our spouse and family this Christmas and throughout every day of the year.
