This month my local scrapbook shop is running a layout contest. The winner walks away with $500 in store credit, plus a basket full of albums, tools and embellishments. In addition, the mastermind behind the winning entry will also be invited to demo his/her layout techniques at the store’s monthly scrapbooking workshop weekend.
The store’s contest is run on a quarterly basis and each time it is advertised I consider entering, but never do so. I’ve seen past winners and know I can’t compete with the incredible craftsmanship and creativity submitted by my fellow scrappers. I wish I wouldn’t allow myself to be so intimidated by the competition because I sure could use the free materials and the store credit.
The store owner is constantly looking for new entries and has been encouraging me to submit one of my favorite page designs. Recently, she pointed out that I stand a better chance of winning than I might think because many contestants simply don’t follow the rules.
If you’re considering entering scrapbook contests, it’s critical that you read the contest rules carefully. In most cases, scrapbook contests have very specific entry criteria, such as only accepting layouts that feature a specific theme or requiring the use of a specific product. If your layout doesn’t meet the criteria, it will be automatically disqualified. This is especially true when you are entering larger scrapbook contests such as Creating Keepsakes’ “Scrapbook Hall of Fame” contest or Memory Makers annual “Memory Makers Masters” competition. These types of contests require that you credit products used in your entry.
In regards to judging a winning entry, most sponsors look for overall design, as well as high-quality photos and creative scrapbooking techniques. In the case of my local scrapbook contest, this month, the theme is heartfelt journaling. The winning entry will be featured along with the runners up in a display highlighting the use of journaling blocks. Meanwhile, other contests may judge entries based on the use of a specific product, especially if the contest is sponsored by a particular manufacturer.
