Inexpensive Household Hints

Yes, we see all the so called miracle products on the markets designed to make life easier and help clean your home but sometimes the old tried and true methods used by parents and grandparents work just as well and are less expensive. So I thought I’d share a few old family hints with you.

Keeping a fruit cake

Wrap firmly in cling film, greasproof paper or tin foil and then wrap in several layers of newspaper. Mind you this so one I always have trouble with when it comes to Christmas cake. Not because the idea doesn’t work but because I love fruit cake, so it tends to disappear if I make it too early.

Cleaning the fridge or freezer

When defrosting and cleaning the fridge or freezer I always finish off with a cloth on which there is bi-carb of soda and vanilla essence. As well as making it clean, it will give your fridge a lovely, fresh smell.

To remove blood

To remove blood from material, apply a teaspoon of salt and soak in cold water mixed. The salt will lift the stain.

To remove ink

To remove ink from material, make a paste of vinegar and mustard. Leave the past on overnight and wash well in the morning.

Red Wine on a Carpet

Try water and detergent first. If this does not remove the stain, and that will depend a little on how long since the wine was spilt, then use detergent and a little ammonia. Blot dry and the stain should be gone.

Cleaning Windows

If you’re short of window cleaner don’t worry, mentholated spirits will work just as well to keep your windows clean and shiny.

Hand Wash Garments

I refuse to hand wash garments but many of the non iron type clothing say they should be hand washed. Instead I put them in a bra bag and wash as per normal except I take them out of the washing machine before it goes onto spin. Then twist as manufacture’s instructions and hang to dry. I don’t worry about laying them flat as they suggest either. My clothes always turn out fine and still last well. Some are more years old than I would care to count.
