Inexpensive Road Trip Boredom Busters

According to AAA, a record number of Americans will be hitting the road during the upcoming Fourth of July weekend. Whether you are planning a two-hour car ride to grandma’s summer cottage or you are embarking on a 10-hour haul to a family reunion in Omaha, you’ll want to make sure that your youngest passengers are entertained during the trip.

The following sanity savers will help you survive the ride without a single headache:

Disposable or Digital Cameras: Purchase a disposable camera for each child (depending on age), so that he or she can take pictures on the road. Snapping candid shots at rest stops and restaurants can really spice up the family photo album. Another option is to invest in a digital camera for kids. It may be a bit more expensive than a disposable camera, but if you have a shutterbug in the making, then the results will be priceless.

Bubbles and Balls: These items are great for toddlers to play with at rest stops. In addition, bubbles serve as amazing distractions for youngsters stuck in car seats. If your spouse is driving while your kid is screaming in the back seat, then simply open a bottle of bubbles and start blowing her way from the passenger’s seat. You will be amazed at how quickly your toddler will quiet down upon seeing bubbles floating her way in a moving vehicle.

Craft Items: Paper punches, tape and some yarn will go a long way to keep your preschooler occupied in the back seat of the minivan. If you get desperate you could also hand him a box of Kleenex to shred. The mess might be substantial, but at least you’ll enjoy the momentary silence.

Aluminum Foil: This is a frugal sanity saver for parents traveling with kids. Give each child a sheet of aluminum foil, then have them mold it into anything they want, such as animals, balls, jewelry, crowns, headbands, masks, vehicles, etc.
