There is a Medicaid program in each and every state. In Connecticut, the Medicaid program is administered by the Department of Social Services. The state’s website says that access to quality health care is important to the state of Connecticut.
Medicaid is a public, or government run form of health insurance. It is designed to provide health insurance coverage for individuals and families who are low income and who cannot afford to buy a health plan from a private insurance company. Medicaid is funded, in part, by the federal government. It is also funded by the government of an individual state.
In Connecticut, the Medicaid program is administered by the Connecticut Department of Social Services. The state’s Medicaid program has several different parts to it, each of which is designed to cover a specific population.
To qualify for Medicaid, a person must be aged, blind or disabled or must be part of a family with children, or must be a pregnant woman. There are income and asset eligibility criteria that must be met.
Individuals who meet all the eligibility requirements (except for income), may be eligible for Medicaid because of the amount of medical expenses the person has. To be eligible the amount they owe must be greater than the amount by which their income exceeds the established income standards.
Kids who were born after September 30, 1980, and who come from families whose income is less than 185% of the poverty level, may also qualify for Medicaid. Women who are pregnant, and whose income is less than 250% of the poverty level might also be eligible.
There is also a Medicaid program for low-income adults. It is called HUSKY-D. People who are between the ages of 19 and 64 might qualify. To be eligible, the person must not currently be receiving federal Supplemental Security Income or Medicare. You can access an application form for HUSKY-D through the Connecticut Medicaid website.
HUSKY is another portion of the Medicaid program in Connecticut. It covers children and teenagers who are under the age of 19. It also will cover eligible parents and relative caregivers. In addition to covering children and their parents/caregivers, HUSKY will cover eligible women who are pregnant.
There are several other helpful programs offered in Connecticut that are not part of Medicaid. The Connecticut Aids Drug Assistance program helps to prolong the life of people who have AIDS or HIV. It pays for drugs that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has determined will be effective. This is just one of the many programs Connecticut offers.
