Inspiring Words from Unlikely Places

Sometimes inspiring words come from the most unlikely places. This morning I was reading a post on the Sydney Swans Football site. For those of you who know me well, you will know I have a passion for my red and white footy team. One of the co-captains made a speech at the presentation of the jerseys that impressed me. A lot of what he said could actually be applied to marriage.
When I said to Mick I was going to use it as a blog post for marriage he said. ’ I can see why.’

So here are my thoughts and changes to the original words. When that wedding ring is slipped on your finger, wear it with pride. Each day as you wear it, remember what has gone before and what will come after. You want your marriage to be something special, don’t you?

It’s easy to put on a wedding ring and even to plan a wedding. What’s hard is to put your heart and soul into making a marriage work. What’s hard is making sure each day is a celebration of your love, not just the day you are married.
It’s easy to talk about commitment. A lot of people mouth the words. What’s harder is to actually commit. To commit not just for a couple of years or while the first flush of love is there, but to commit to pulling together even in the hard times. To commit to living your lives together as a couple who demonstrate to others what a happy lasting marriage looks like.

Just as in a footy team it needs to be ‘a team-first attitude,’ in a marriage it also needs to be team first- a team of two of you working towards a common goal. In marriage you need to be united.

One of the other things to remember is no marriage is perfect, but that doesn’t mean we should stop trying to make it the best it can be. All marriages should be a constant work in progress.
