Ohio Requires Insurance Coverage for Exotic Animals
Ohio now requires owners of exotic animals to purchase a certain amount of liability insurance coverage for each animal they own. They also have to prove that they are providing proper care for the animals, and that they have good fences.

The Insurance Podcast Roundup went up on April 30, 2012. This week, I’d like to point out an episode of NPR’s “All Things Considered” podcast. The episode is called “Colorado Extends Medicaid to Some Adults Without Children”. If Colorado can do it, then perhaps other states could, too.

Judge Rules Texas Can’t Ban Planned Parenthood from WHP Funds
A federal judge ruled that the state of Texas cannot ban Planned Parenthood clinics from receiving funding from the Medicaid Women’s Health Program. This ruling lasted almost a day before it was changed.

Texas Medicaid WHP Funding for Planned Parenthood is in Limbo
The very next day, a different judge placed a stay on the injunction that Judge Lee Yeakel ruled. This decision puts the Medicare WHP funding for Planned Parenthood into limbo.

Aetna Covers Woman’s Mammogram After All
Aetna denied a woman’s claim for a mammogram, even though her doctor recommended she get one. The reason was because the woman was born male and changed her sex to female. After a lengthy appeal, Aetna decided to cover her mammogram after all.

Mortgage Guaranty Insurance Corporation (MGIC) shouldn’t have messed with moms of newborns. The insurer told women that it would deny their application for mortgage insurance until the women got off their maternity leave and returned to work. MGIC had to pay out a settlement.

In the latest “nationwide takedown”, 107 medical professionals were charged with fraudulently billing Medicare for a total of nearly half a billion dollars. It is hoped that takedowns like this one will make criminals stop seeing Medicare as an attractive target.

Maryland Launches Insurance Watch
The state of Maryland has started a web portal called Insurance Watch. It will allow doctors to report on health insurance companies that are using abusive practices. They can also report when insurers deny legitimate claims.

Uninsured Woman Fakes Breast Cancer to Get Implants
A woman in Arizona told people that she had breast cancer that was severe enough to require a double mastectomy. She had no health insurance. Kind people raised money for her cancer treatment. It turned out that she lied. She had no cancer at all, but wanted the money so she could pay for breast implants.

Alabama Governor Will Veto Insurance Exchanges
The House of Representatives in Alabama passed a bill that would start their states insurance exchange. The Governor of Alabama has promised to veto all bills that will enable a state insurance exchange to be put together.
