When I started this blog series off in the beginning of the year, I mentioned several things that I wanted to be intentional about. One of them was being intentional about seeking new opportunities for work.
This may not apply to everyone, but for some of us who work at home, we have to be seekers. For instance, freelance writers don’t usually get work dropped into their laps. We have to actively seek work.
I have been working steadily, full-time for nearly two years now with a web content company in which I write articles, blogs, news pieces and FAQ’s for law firms. I love my work. I never would have imagined that the law would be an area of interest but it has turned into that.
But let’s face it…nothing is guaranteed in the world of writing. So I still seek potential new opportunities just in case. Or I might add some extra assignments for a season.
The problem with some people who work at home is that they don’t have the drive, motivation, willingness or whatever it may be to get the work. We sit and hope the telephone rings, the email arrives in our inbox or in some other mysterious way, it just happens.
But we have to be pursuers of our work. Even if you aren’t a writer, you may be someone who has to actively seek out clients. You can’t just let word-of-mouth be the only way that someone turns to you for business. You have to find ways to get out there and let your name (or business) be made known.
What steps can you take to be intentional about seeking new opportunities? What online job boards could you check out? Which newspapers could you scour? In what ways can you make the most of social media in getting your business out there?
Are there fliers or brochures you could create? Should you have a business card? A website? These are all different ideas that may work for you. But you have to be intentional about seeking these things out.
