In continuing my series on being intentional about your home-based business, this blog is going to address being intentional about your time. It’s funny how so many people think that because I work at home, I have all this “time” for other things.
The reality is that we are all given the same 24 hours a day. I don’t get anymore than the next person. How we choose to use that time is completely up to us.
If I do have time to do things like read or whatever else it may be, it is because I choose to make that time. We all choose to spend our time the way we want to. So it’s never an issue of someone else having more of it.
What makes my struggle in working at home more challenging than those who work outside the home, is that I have to be a good manager of my time. When you have scheduled hours, there is no choice in the matter. You clock in at a certain time and you clock out at a certain time.
When you are working out of your home, you have to discipline yourself to spend your time wisely. I have to admit that I don’t always do this well, but I am working on it.
Think about how you spend your time. Are you wasting it on things that distract you from accomplishing something better? Do you value your time? Do you consider the best way to use your time?
Sometimes we do things and don’t put any thought into it. We develop these habits and ways of doing things, even though they may not be working in our favor.
Here are some common time-wasters and distracters that you may need to be intentional about cutting out of your life—computer (Facebook, web surfing, checking email), phone calls (or texting) and television. We have these things more easily at our disposal when we work from home. So we have to be disciplined in eliminating time-wasters and distracters.
What areas do you need to work on and be intentional about when it comes to your time? Make 2012 a year to really tackle those issues.
